Statement by the Chairman of the Committee for Environmental Protection on behalf of the delegation of Tajikistan at the 26th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in Glasgow

On November 10, 2021, as part of the participation of the delegation of the Republic of Tajikistan at the 26th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change in Glasgow, Great Britain, the Chairman of the Committee for Environmental Protection under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan Sheralizoda Bahodur Ahmadjon made a statement on behalf of the state delegation.

In his statement, Sheralizoda B.A. drew the attention of the ministers and heads of delegations present to the initiative of the President of the Republic of Tajikistan, the respected Emomali Rahmon, to declare 2025 the “Year of Glacier Protection” and determine the date for the annual celebration of this day, as well as to create a “Glacier Protection Fund” in Republic of Tajikistan.

It was noted that about 60% of the total volume of water resources in the region is formed in Tajikistan, which, in turn, plays a huge role in the process of sustainable development of the Central Asian countries.

In his statement, the Chairman of the Committee emphasized that despite the minimum amount of greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere, Tajikistan is the most vulnerable country to the effects of climate change.

It was also noted that Tajikistan, within the framework of its commitments under the Paris Agreement, has submitted NDCs (Nationally Determined Contributions) to the Secretariat of the Convention, which once again underlines the most serious attention of the Government of the country to issues of environmental protection and adaptation to climate change.

The statement emphasized that Tajikistan is ready to continue to work closely with the United Nations, partner countries, international donors and organizations to ensure the necessary actions in the fight against climate change and its harmful consequences for the country.
