9th IYGP 2025 Advisory Board Meeting Advances Global Glacier Protection and Climate Advocacy
The 9th meeting of the International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation (IYGP) 2025 Advisory Board was held today in hybrid format—online and in Dushanbe, Tajikistan—bringing together high-level experts, institutional partners, and national representatives to advance collective efforts for glacier protection and global climate action.
The meeting focused on evaluating progress under IYGP 2025, aligning strategic objectives for the remaining months of the year, and planning for global advocacy events in the lead-up to COP30.
The meeting opened with welcome remarks by Mr. Bahodur Sheralizoda, Chairman of the Committee for Environmental Protection under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan, reiterating the country’s leadership role in convening global efforts for glacier preservation.
The Advisory Board also explored the potential policy impact of IYGP outcomes at upcoming global events. Opportunities were identified to integrate key messages into the UNFCCC SB62 in Bonn (June), the International Mountain Conference in Innsbruck (September), and the World Water Week in Stockholm (August), which features a dedicated Glacier to Water Day likely to draw heads of state and high-level decision-makers. Further engagements are expected during UNGA Climate Week in New York, COP30 in Brazil, the G20 Summit in Johannesburg, and the World Economic Forum in Davos early next year.
Looking ahead, participants were briefed on the preliminary planning for the IYGP 2025 Closing Event, tentatively scheduled for 20 March 2026. The event is expected to serve as a culminating moment for the year, bringing together key partners to reflect on impact and chart the way forward.
As IYGP 2025 enters its final phase, the Advisory Board reaffirmed its commitment to leveraging science, diplomacy, and international cooperation to elevate glacier preservation as a global climate priority.
