FAO strengthens Tajikistan's capacity to monitor and evaluate climate action

Measurement, Reporting and Verification (MRV) refers to the multi-step process of measuring the amount of greenhouse gas emissions reduced by specific mitigation activities. MRV is key to disclosing climate finance and demonstrating progress towards climate goals. However, careful reporting is required to ensure effective results

On 11 May 2023, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) officially handed over IT equipment to the Committee on Environmental Protection under the Government of Tajikistan (CEP).

The assistance was provided within the framework of the Second Readiness Project, supported by the Green Climate Fund.

IT equipment, including 14 laptops, 2 desktops, 16 routers and 1 server box worth 18319.00 USD were handed over to the Monitoring Department of the CEP. This equipment will strengthen the technical capacity of the Office and enable it to effectively monitor climate change activities in Tajikistan.

Earlier in 2022, two training workshops on monitoring and evaluation of climate change projects were attended by government representatives, the private sector and international experts in the field of climate finance and accreditation. The knowledge gained, along with the equipment, will improve the technical capacity of the CEP and enable effective monitoring of the country's efforts to combat climate change in Tajikistan.

The ceremony to hand over the technical equipment was attended by Bahodur Sheralizoda, Chairman of the Committee on Environmental Protection under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan and Oleg Guchgeldiev, representative of the UN FAO.

"We believe that this programme will contribute to Tajikistan's climate change mitigation and adaptation efforts and we are proud to support the Government of Tajikistan in implementing its nationally determined contribution," said FAO representative Oleg Guchgeldiev at the opening ceremony.

FAO remains committed to supporting Tajikistan in its efforts to combat climate change and the importance of well-established domestic monitoring and evaluation systems for all types of climate change projects. The project also plans to continue conducting national MRV trainings in different regions of Tajikistan and developing a national MRV system.
