The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) arranged a training on Measurement, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) System for climate projects in Tajikistan for the stakeholders and the Committee of Environmental Protection under the Government of Tajikistan (CoEP) on November 16, 2023. The training is provided within the Second Readiness Project, supported by the Green Climate Fund (GCF).

FAO in Tajikistan supports the development of MRV system as the essential part of monitoring and reporting system under Paris Agreement of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Tajikistan. The project is aimed at the creation of the system, which allows to collect the data on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and provide the monitoring mechanism for more reliable reporting under convention’s obligations.

This is the second training activity in 2023 aimed at the raising the capacity of the Committee of Environmental Protection as well as other stakeholders in understanding the modalities of reporting mechanisms and developing skills on its us.  Earlier in 2023, FAO provided the relevant equipment, including laptops and desktops, for organize the effective system of data collection at the subnational level.  It will also allow to effectively monitor country's efforts to combat climate change in Tajikistan.

“Today’s event is aimed at familiarization with the developed MRV system as an essential part of Tajikistan’s efforts to comply with the provisions of the UNFCCC convention, - says Oleg Guchgeldiyev, FAO Representative in Tajikistan. “Under Readiness project and with support of FAO, the government will be able to collect the primary data and systematically monitor the situation with GHG emissions for better understanding and reporting. FAO stands ready to continue its support to the government of Tajikistan to expand the system by involving other significant parties, including private sector into MRV mechanism.”

The FAO remains committed to supporting Tajikistan in its efforts to combat climate change and   ensuring well-established local monitoring and evaluation systems for all types of climate change projects. Earlier FAO in Tajikistan assisted the government to coordinate the multi-stakeholder work on identifying and approving the National Determined Contributions (NDC), one of the important mechanisms to achieve the climate change goals under UNFCCC convention.

The second readiness project operates under the Environmental Protection Committee of the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan, implemented by FAO.

In addition to developing the MRV system, the project aims to develop the country programme for GCF funding and build the capacity of the private sector, including private financial institutions, to implement climate projects in the country.

The knowledge gained, together with the equipment, will improve the technical capacity of the Committee for Environmental Protection and enable it to monitor and verify projects related to climate change.
