Workshop on "Biosafety - policy, control and monitoring system"                           

On March 30, at the initiative of the National Action Center for Environmental Protection of the Committee and with the participation of the First Deputy Chairman of the Committee, Kiyomzoda Zarafo, the representative of the United Nations Environment Organization (UNEP), Mr. Alex Ovsubinei, and representatives of relevant ministries and departments at the Rumi Hotel in Dushanbe within the framework of the UNEP project - "Implementation of the Framework Document on Biosafety", a seminar was held.

The event was opened by the First Deputy Chairman of the Committee Kiyomzoda Z. and welcomed the participants of the seminar on behalf of the leadership of the Committee. In his speech, Kiyomzoda Z. noted the attention and initiatives of the leader of the nation, Emomali Rahmon, regarding the richness of biological diversity and environmental agreements.

It was noted that as part of the fulfillment of the obligations of the Republic of Tajikistan, with the support of the UNEP project - "Implementation of the Framework Document on Biological Safety", a document was prepared that initiated the preparation of the "National Reports (2011, 2015)", which included provisions on the current preparation of the country for biological security. Also, Kiyomzoda Z. noted the need to improve the political and legislative framework of the Republic of Tajikistan and develop the Law of the Republic of Tajikistan “On safe work with genetically modified organisms” in 2022 together with representatives of the Majlisi Namoyandagon Majlisi Oli of the Republic of Tajikistan.

In the seminar Shermatov H., Ovsubiney Alex, Irgashev S. and Mirakova M. spoke on the topics “Foundation of the system of biosafety capacity in Tajikistan”, “The role of the Cartagena Protocol in the Global Program of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity”, “On the safe handling of GMOs” , "The Biosafety Clearing-House".

After listening to the reports, the participants of the seminar exchanged views on the safety of handling products containing GMOs, the activities of laboratories to determine the presence of GMOs in food products and agricultural seeds.
